Groq and AI API Alternatives
Groq is an AI API platform focused on running language models very quickly. In Next.js projects, it can power code evaluation, text generation, chatbots, summaries and exam-style widgets without building a heavy AI backend yourself.
const response = await fetch("https://api.groq.com/openai/v1/chat/completions", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.GROQ_API_KEY}`,
"Content-Type": "application/json",
},
body: JSON.stringify({
model: "llama-3.1-8b-instant",
messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Review my code" }],
}),
});Groq
Provides very fast access to open models such as Llama. Its free quota makes it practical for small Next.js experiments and learning projects.
Gemini
Google's AI model family. It can handle text, code and multimodal tasks, but free quota depends on the account, model and region.
OpenRouter
Gives access to many models through one API. It is useful when you want to switch models easily or try free models.
Hugging Face
A strong platform for open-source models. Free usage can be limited, but the model ecosystem is large.
Ollama
Runs models locally on your own computer. It does not need an API key, but your machine's performance matters.
Why use it with Next.js?
- It can be called safely from a Next.js API route while keeping the key private.
- Features like code exams, quizzes, feedback generation and summaries can be added quickly.
- The model provider can be changed later as needs grow: Groq, Gemini, OpenRouter or local models.
Where it helps in a project
- A timed code-quality exam widget
- A tool that summarizes blog posts
- A mini chatbot that answers visitor questions
- A dashboard that classifies or prioritizes form messages
